#10- Connecting from afar

If there is one thing that has been taught to many, especially over the course of the 2020 pandemic, it's that connection with those close to us is important. People maintained their connections and helped to deal with the troubling events of the world by communicating online on mediums such as video calling, calling, texting, social media, etc.      Even before the pandemic intensified how people communicate with each other technologically, people have used the internet to help strengthen their connections with other people since its birth. Email has been a convenient alternative to handwritten letters that allows messages to be sent instantly and received by people in a much shorter time frame. It also still allows for the classic letter format to convey messages to those we miss from afar in a less casual manner. Text messaging also instant messaging in an even more easily accessible way that can also be used for more casual conversation or exchang...

#9-Topics in food quest

Image
This image/political cartoon above is a great example of criticizing a massive problem within the food industry. Both each image within the cartoon and the caption used help to painfully portray the sorry state of the agricultural and processing part of the food industry. It also demonstrates how far these corporations go to achieve good looking food over organic and natural food.      The first image shows a machine that appears to be lasering the ground of any other possible plants or weeds that are growing where the crops are being grown.  The machine also is emitting tons of smoke from running. This image is supposed to demonstrate the practice of using lasers before growing crops can be harmful and inorganic. The process itself discourages plant diversity which ultimately helps crops to thrive longer as it produces better soil each year. The smoke the machine produces also implies that the process produces pollution that ultimately harms the e...

#8- The Black Friday dilemma.

This year's black Friday has shed light on how dumbed down the coveted holiday sales day has become in recent years. There were many stores that did not have insane black Friday crowds as in years before. Many stores only experienced slightly busier days instead of bracing for manic customers running around with carts of products. The truth of it is that there are many factors why Black Friday isn't the same anymore. Many recent developments and events have helped to shape this.      The first, and biggest culprit of why the Black Friday crowds weren't all there was due to the easy accessibility of online shopping. Online shopping saves the hassle of the time and money of transportation, and allows people to access the deals they want to from home. It also helps store earn more profits because people who normally do not go Black Friday shopping (or are unable to) can look around websites to find similar or even better deals without the stress of compet...

#7: Fresh

After watching the documentary-style film Fresh , I was left with a significant amount of insights and questions about the food industry and how I take part of it as a consumer, as well as learned a bit more about my level of self awareness about what I consume. It effectively uses rhetoric to show the audiences what is going on in the food industry, why it is bad, and what it being done to go against the negative aspects of it.      The purpose of the film, which goes into depth on the current state of farming and how consumerism has led to negative and harmful practices that are both negative to animals within it and the humans who consume it, was to give insight into the flaws and faults within the agricultural aspect of the food industry so that consumers are aware how much the industry practices are inhumane, cruel, and inefficient to the processes of nature. Its audience was primarily to Americans consumers, but could also apply to consumers aro...

#3 The 'mint'

I approached the dimly lit kitchen with hesitance about the unique experience I was about to partake in. I was only doing this because I had no other option and time was ticking. It had to be done, and it had to be done now. There it was, sitting proudly atop the windowsill, free of any wrapper or sticker to bind it's mighty green half-sphere. It was very diminutive compared to the other household objects that sat atop that windowsill over the sink, but it stood out, a fruit among the pots and cups.       I reached out and picked the little thing up and examined it under the palm of my hand. The open halve was round, a firm skin protected the valuable part inside, and it was the color of a bright summer forest. It was dimpled on the surface and could have been compared to the color and texture of a very unripe avocado. The inside of the item I was about to consume was a whole other story. A bright, pale green gem glimmered back at me. Divided into...

#6: The Fan's Appeal

Note: This does contain some spoilers from Blumhouse's Five Nights at Freddy's     On October 27th, 2023, a long awaited adaptation of a popular horror game franchise had finally been released in theaters and on Peacock, Universal's primary streaming service. Five Nights at Freddy's  is based off the game franchise of the same name, following the harrowing experience of working the nightshift at Freddy Fazbear's pizzeria. In this universe, the iconic animatronic mascots of the restaurant are sentient and move around, and also commit the occasional violent act against the player, or a character for purposes of its convoluted lore.     With over half a dozen games, multiple books, and respective merchandise, being released since 2014, it's no wonder that FNAF (acronym) has been a hit in the horror genre, even popularizing a niche of horror games called "mascot horror" that fall on a similar genre that FNAF fits into. When it was in its early ye...

#5: Allstate's rhetorical mayhem

Allstate, an American insurance company, ran an ad campaign that specialized their spokesperson portraying situations that life throws at people to demonstrate why good insurance, particularly from Allstate, is needed. The ad from their campaign that will be analyzed specifically is Cat, linked here:  Cat Allstate Ad YouTube .       The ad's summary can be reduced to their spokesperson acting as an American family's cat, who wishes to wreak havoc on their household. Throughout the spokesperson destroying items and scowling at the owners, he explains how his mischief-making abilities would need good insurance to keep their household in check. Outside of the purpose Allstate has of selling their insurance, this ad campaign is trying to focus on the idea that life throws things towards people's way that cause damage, especially where they least expect it. This idea is what they use to convince people that they need to put their money towards go...
